That's why we're incredibly proud to have been awarded a Gold EcoVadis Medal, placing MKM among the top 5% of more than 150,000 companies worldwide assessed for their sustainability performance.

What is EcoVadis?

EcoVadis is one of the world's most recognised providers of business sustainability assessments. Its independent evaluation looks at how organisations perform across key areas including environmental management, ethics, labour and human rights, and sustainable procurement.

For our customers and suppliers, achieving Gold gives independent reassurance that sustainability isn't just something we talk about, it's something we're actively embedding across our business.

A Milestone in Our Sustainability Journey

This achievement marks another important step forward for our business. Since our first EcoVadis assessment, we've progressed from Bronze to Silver and now Gold, increasing our overall score by 39 points overall.

It's also independent reassurance for our customers that sustainability isn't simply something we talk about. EcoVadis looks in detail at the policies, actions and evidence behind what businesses do, so achieving Gold demonstrates that we're managing sustainability, ethics and supply chain responsibility in a robust and transparent way.

Sustainability, the MKM Way

As a business built around local branches, we've never believed in a one-size-fits-all approach. Our branch teams know their local communities best, and have the freedom and autonomy to take ownership of local initiatives while being supported by specialist teams across the wider business.

This approach has helped create a culture of ‘Doing The Right Thing’ which has become a part of everyday decision-making. Every MKM branch is actively involved in supporting their local community through sponsorship, fundraising, donations, or volunteering, while we continue investing in ways to reduce our environmental impact and improve how we operate.

Investing for the Future

Over the last few years we've continued to make significant progress across the business, including:

• Opening our first two BREEAM Excellent certified branches in Cheltenham and Wolverhampton.
• Expanding the use of electric forklift trucks across our network.
• Strengthening supplier engagement through our Supplier Code of Conduct.
• Increasing access to products that support more sustainable construction, including renewable heating solutions, energy-efficient products and lower-carbon building materials.

The assessment also recognised our ongoing investment in health, safety and our people through initiatives such as our Go Home Safe programme, alongside improvements in sustainable procurement and ethical supply chain management.

 

 

Why Independent Recognition Matters

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important across the construction industry, with customers, suppliers and businesses all looking for greater transparency and accountability. Independent assessments such as EcoVadis help demonstrate that the commitments businesses make are backed by real action.

"Customers are, quite rightly, asking more questions than ever before about sustainability, responsible sourcing and supply chain performance. Achieving Gold gives them confidence that we're not only responding to those expectations today, but that we've built the systems, processes and culture to keep improving into the future.

We're incredibly proud of this achievement, but Gold isn't the finish line. Sustainability is about continuous improvement, and we'll continue working with our suppliers, our customers and our branch teams to make a positive difference for our communities and for the construction industry."

Looking Ahead

Achieving Gold is something we're extremely proud of, but we're not stopping here. Alongside our EcoVadis Gold Medal, MKM is also a Gold member of the Supply Chain Sustainability School, a Construction Leadership Council CO2nstruct Zero Business Champion, and holds full timber Chain of Custody certification. These commitments reflect our ambition to keep driving positive change across the construction sector while helping our customers build for the future.
