To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2023, we asked a few of our fantastic apprentices what they enjoy most about being part of the MKM team. 

 

We have seen the benefits of apprenticeships over the years, particularly with employees in senior positions who progressed from an apprentice level. 

 

At MKM, we offer apprentices the chance to earn while they learn and take pride in paying at least the National Minimum Wage rate to all our apprentices. 

 

Here we ask Amy Dodds about her time as a Trade Supplier L2 and what she is enjoying most so far. 

 

Why MKM?

I found out about the apprenticeship from the internet but was aware of MKM as a family member uses a local branch. I chose MKM as I’ve always thought it was a good business to be involved in with lots of prospects and opportunities.

 

What was I doing before starting the apprenticeship>

I was a student at the University of Hull, where I studied Politics for four years. I also had a part time job at a pub.

 

What does a typical working day look like for me?

A typical day for me would involve serving customers on the counter, taking enquiries and orders over the phone, completing quotes for customers and ensuring the branch is full of stock!

 

If you had one piece of advice for someone looking to start an apprenticeship with MKM, what would it be?

I would say do it! Enjoy the process and gain as much knowledge and experience from the process as you can. The whole team have made me feel so welcome and have taught me everything I know now.

 

Outside of my apprenticeship, what am I learning about how businesses work and the importance of teamwork?

I am learning that there are many factors to a successful business.  Communication is key however, both with external customers and also employees internally – a great way of ensuring your team is happy at work!
