MKM’s founder David Kilburn earns top honour from the King
MKM is celebrating after founder David Kilburn received a CBE in the King’s first birthday honours, in recognition of his services to the construction industry and charity.
The fantastic achievement comes as David celebrates his 60th year in the construction sector. David founded MKM in 1995, alongside close friend Peter Murray, and has grown the merchant from a single site in Hull to more than 100 branches right across the UK.
David still plays an active role in MKM today, but also uses his significant platform to help influence and nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs across Hull and the East Riding. He is a founder of For Entrepreneurs Only, an organisation that provides support and advice to people setting up businesses in Yorkshire.
David said: “It is a very moving experience, and I think of all the people who have contributed to what has been achieved. It is very humbling, that’s how I feel about it, and I’m very happy to receive it.
“This sort of recognition does not happen without the great people who have worked with us, the talent. I have been very lucky as without the support from lots of people, my wife Linda, and lots of others, it wouldn’t have been possible. It has been a very interesting journey and it is a very humbling experience.”
Kate Tinsley, CEO at MKM, added: “The whole team is so happy for David. The recognition is very well-earned – particularly as David is marking his 60th anniversary in the construction sector this year.
“As a business, MKM has always been about ‘doing the right thing’ and that’s a value David really embodies, thanks to his extensive charity work both in Hull and further afield.
“The MKM team can’t wait to celebrate when David picks up his CBE at his investiture later this year!”
