We’re proud to share that MKM has been awarded a Silver Medal in our latest sustainability assessment by EcoVadis, scoring 70/100 and placing us in the top 15% of companies worldwide. It’s a significant step forward on our journey to embed sustainability into everything we do – or, as we like to say, Doing the Right Thing.
EcoVadis is the global benchmark for sustainable supply chains, and our improved score – up 28 points since our first assessment – reflects real progress across environmental impact, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.
“Doing the Right Thing” – Together
“This recognition shows that our commitment to doing the right thing – whether that’s working with suppliers to uphold strong ethical standards, supporting local communities and charities, or helping customers build greener – is making an impact,” said Rachel Constable, Head of ESG at MKM. “We know we’re not done yet, and this just gives us more drive to keep improving.”
At MKM, sustainability isn’t just a top-down initiative. It’s driven by our 135 branches, each deeply rooted in their local communities. From fundraising and volunteering to supporting grassroots causes, our teams are making a difference where it matters most.
“Because our branches operate independently, success depends on each team getting behind the initiatives,” added Rachel. “That’s why achieving Silver is so rewarding – it reflects the culture of our teams and their commitment to making progress that matters.”
Greener Operations, Smarter Partnerships
We’re investing in better ways to build and operate. Our new Cheltenham branch, built to BREEAM Excellent standards, sets the bar for future sites with an all-electric energy system and on-site renewable generation.
We’re also evolving our logistics fleet with electric forklifts and alternative fuel HGVs, and our ‘Go Home Safe’ initiative continues to prioritise health and safety across all branches.
Beyond our own operations, we’re working with industry partners to accelerate sustainability. MKM is a Gold member of the Supply Chain Sustainability School, an active participant in the Builders Merchants Federation’s Sustainability Working Group, and a CO2nstruct Zero Business Champion through the Construction Leadership Council.
We’re also collaborating with suppliers to uphold our Code of Conduct and ensure customers have access to the right products – from renewable heating solutions via our specialist Oceanair division, to low-carbon insulation and materials that support biodiversity.
Looking Ahead
“Everyone’s welcome at MKM,” said Rachel. “We’re proud that our inclusive culture is part of what’s driven our progress and improved EcoVadis score.”
Customer demand for sustainable solutions is rising, and regulations are evolving. We’re determined to keep supporting our customers and communities every step of the way.
“Achieving Silver is a great result, but what matters most is the direction we’re heading,” Rachel concluded. “We’re committed to keeping that momentum, challenging ourselves to do better, and working together to build a more sustainable future.”
