When the doors of MKM Aldershot opened in early May ’22, it brought unparalleled choice for both trade and public to the area, providing access to an independently ran builders’ merchant, part of the largest independent merchant in the U.K, MKM.

It also symbolised the beginning of a new chapter for Branch Directors’ Matt Ince and Luke James, who between them share almost three decades of experience in the industry. Having both started in junior roles, the pair have forged separate career paths through various ranks that has led to them running their own business together.

“I started my career working in the yard for a national merchant, before moving on to sales roles, Assistant Manager, and then Branch Manager for a number of years” explains Matt.

“Similar to Matt, I started as an Office Sales Assistant before working my way up via Assistant Manager, and then Branch Manager. In these last two roles I worked across multiple branches and areas” says Luke James.

Together, Luke and Matt have experience across the Hampshire / Surrey boarder, along the M3 and A3 corridors, enabling them to provide a solid understanding of the local area alongside their comprehensive product range and experience, culminating in an offering that is tailor made for tradespeople and homeowners across the region.

So, what can customers expect from MKM Aldershot?

“A one-stop-shop for all building, landscaping and kitchen and bathroom needs, when you walk through our door, it’s as a mate everyone is welcome to stop by for a chat on how we can help.” Explains Matt.

“We’re ambitious, we have a 5-year plan, and have strong aspirations, of course, there is a lot of hard work that comes with those aspirations. We need to establish ourselves, our branch and utilise our strong team to grow.” Says Luke.

With lots to be done even after all the progress to get to this point, rest is key for the Branch Directors to ensure a healthy work-life balance.

What's life outside of work like for a Branch Director?

“I’m a big football fan, usually found watching Aldershot FC or Chelsea. I’m big into my darts too and F1. Sometimes I like to relax by listening to music, often Jazz or Country, something Mellow,” explains Luke. “And of course, an ideal day off is spent with my family. Maybe visit a garden centre, then have a nice big roast dinner.”

“I follow Newcastle, Aldershot and Hampton & Richmond, because I just love football to be honest,” says Mat. “I try to stay active and healthy through exercise and going to the gym, where I’ll be listening to some hip-hop and 2-Pac. For my days off I’ll usually catch-up on some sleep with a nice lie in, then something sports related.”
