MKM Building Supplies, the UK’s proper independent builders’ merchant, will open its 142nd branch at Edinburgh Fort Kinnaird on Monday 9 March 2026, creating 17 new jobs for local people and continuing the company’s strong expansion across the UK in 2026.
The new branch will be led by Branch Directors James Douglas and Scott Fowler, two experienced merchants who together bring more than 60 years of experience across kitchens, joinery, timber and building materials. Both live on the outskirts of Edinburgh and say opening an MKM branch in the city is something they are genuinely proud of.
Talking about his new branch, James said: “Edinburgh is a brilliant place to work and live. It’s got history, character and a busy trade scene. There’s also a huge amount of building work going on across the city. Opening a proper independent merchant here is a great opportunity.”
Scott brings more than 26 years of industry experience, starting out in warehouse roles before moving into sales and management. Most recently he managed key accounts across Edinburgh and the east of Scotland.
“What excited us about MKM is the freedom to build the branch the right way. We’ve recruited a strong team, we know the local market, and we can shape the offer around what customers actually need. The aim is simple. Build the best builders’ merchant in Edinburgh.”
Branch Director James brings more than 30 years in the trade, including senior roles with Magnet, Howdens, MGM Timber and Travis Perkins.
He added, “Fort Kinnaird is a fantastic location. We’re right next to one of Scotland’s biggest retail outlets and just off the bypass, so it’s easy for trades coming in and out of the city. Accessibility matters and we think this site gives us a real advantage.”
Built around what customers actually need
“We want this branch to be a proper one stop shop. Whether someone needs landscaping, timber, kitchens or core building materials, they should be able to get it all in one place and get good advice while they’re here,” Scott explained.
MKM Edinburgh Fort Kinnaird will offer a full range of building materials including joinery and timber, kitchens and bathrooms, landscaping products, plumbing and heating supplies, plasterboard and insulation. An inspiring kitchen and bathroom showroom will give customers a chance to see products up close and talk through designs with the team.
Scott explained: “We want this branch to be a proper one stop shop. Whether someone needs landscaping, timber, kitchens or core building materials, they should be able to get it all in one place and get good advice while they’re here.”
The branch will stock leading brands including Global Stone, Siniat, Kingspan, James Jones Timber, Superglass, Marshalls and Symphony, ensuring strong availability across both structural and finishing products.
The team has been recruited largely from the local merchanting sector, bringing a deep understanding of what Edinburgh trades use day to day.
Scott added: “Local knowledge counts for a lot. We know the jobs happening around the city and the products customers rely on. That helps us get the stock profile right from day one.”
First class service from the go
“The approach is simple. Look after customers and everything else follows. I always say the same three things. Service, price and communication. If you get those right and treat people properly, customers come back.” Said Scott.
Trade customers will benefit from next day delivery, with same day and Saturday delivery available where possible, alongside knowledgeable staff, promotions and trade events.
James added: “At the end of the day, trades want reliability. They want the right stock, good prices and people behind the counter who know what they’re talking about. That’s exactly what we’re building here.”
Part of the local community
James said: “Being part of the community matters to us. We want this to be a branch people know and trust, somewhere customers can pop in, talk through a job and get the help they need. If we can support local charities and groups along the way, even better.”
Plans are already in place to support local charities including Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home and The Ridge Foundation, alongside local sponsorships and fundraising activity.
Scott summed it up: “We’re really looking forward to opening the doors. Good people, good stock and a branch that’s here to help the local trade get the job done.”
