The bathroom is without a doubt one of the most-used rooms in any home, so it’s no surprise that this is where more than two-thirds of our household water consumption comes from.

Saving water is important for many different reasons, from improving your environmental footprint to saving money, which is why we’ve shared our top bathroom water-saving tips below.

Change your shower handset

The shower uses approximately 30% of your household’s water consumption, so it’s an obvious place to start. According to Waterwise, the average shower handset uses an astonishing 12 litres of water per minute, but there are lots of low-flow rate shower handsets available – with some using as little as six litres per minute.

It’s a common misconception that greater water efficiency means you will have to compromise on your showering experience but look for handsets that feature innovative spray technology and you’ll still be able to enjoy a great shower.

Down the toilet

The water used in the toilet is the same high-quality water that’s in our taps, so it’s important not to waste it. If your toilet is quite old, think about replacing it with a dual flush toilet with a split flush plate or button, which typically uses around 4-6 litres of water, compared to older systems that can use as much as 13 litres with each flush.

Change your taps

Built in aerators on taps are a great way to reduce water consumption and reduce your water bills. Some taps can run on average around 15 litres of water per minute however, taps with aerators can reduce this to as little as 4.2 litres a minute.

Look for UWLA labelling

Look for our bathroom products that feature the Unified Water Label (UWLA). This label provides easy to understand messaging about water and energy consumption, helping you to make better informed decsions about buying products that use water wisely. With the ongoing cost of living crisis, this visibility can help you to reduce your water and energy consumption.
